GLAD WORKS & Stormy Productions Pioneer iPhone Technology for Rhode Island Public Radio
PAWTUCKET, RI - For the first time ever, an NPR news station can be heard on your iPhone for free anywhere on the planet. Two Rhode Island-based design and development agencies, GLAD WORKS and Stormy Productions, created the nation's first-ever free application for streaming an NPR station, in this case, WRNI, Rhode Island's only NPR news station operated by Rhode Island Public Radio. The application is designed for the iPhone (both first generation and second generation 3G), and streams over both AT&T's Edge and 3G networks, as well as any wifi network.
With this innovation, any listener can now access - at no charge - the NPR news and programming as heard on WRNI through their iPhones.
"I am absolutely thrilled to be the first NPR station in the country to provide this new technology for iPhone users around the world," said WRNI General Manager Joe O'Connor. "Given that almost 1,000 people downloaded this application within 24 hours from as far away as Japan and Germany, it's clear that there is a global and mobile demand for Rhode Island Public Radio."
On the first day of the iTunes application's launch on September 18th, WRNI's streaming audience quadrupled.
The free download of the application is both available on iTunes and here on wrni.org. In addition, any iPod Touch with 2.0 software update can also stream WRNI with access to any wifi network.
