Providence, R.I. – Advocates for the prevention of domestic violence warn the state is on pace to see the highest number of domestic violence deaths ever record in a single year.

The Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence says seven people have died as a result of domestic violence so far this year. The group says if that pace continues, it will surpass all previous yearly totals since it began keeping records 30 years ago.

Providence, R.I. – Despite the state's deep fiscal crisis, a Republican candidate for governor says military veterans and senior citizens deserve a tax break. John Robitaille, who is himself a former army captain, told a group of veterans last week that the state doesn't do enough to help veterans and senior citizens.

Providence, R.I. – Democrat Bill Lynch said Monday he would propose limiting members of Congress to 12 years in office if elected to the House of Representatives this fall.

Lynch, one of four Democrats vying to replace outgoing Rep. Patrick Kennedy in Congress, said lawmakers will be better motivated to help their constituents if they know they have only a limited time in Washington. He said career politicians can become complacent and especially vulnerable to the influences of lobbyists
and special interests.

Providence, R.I. – A pleasure boat overturned this morning near the Sakonnet Lighthouse, but all seven people on board were rescued without injury. It happened around 10 a.m.

A good Samaritan in a kayak pulled two of the victims out of the water before radioing the Coast Guard for help. The Coast Guard boat couldn't get close enough to the capsized vessel so a crew from the Middletown Fire and Rescue Unit rescued three people from the rocks and two from the water.

All were taken to Little Compton.

Providence, R.I. – The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas has fallen a penny to $2.73 in Rhode Island.

AAA Southern New England says on Monday that the price fell for the second straight week in the Ocean State.

The price is still two cents higher than the national average and about 10 cents higher than at the same time last year.

Providence, R.I. – New state and federal laws require that non-exempt recreational fishermen either purchase a Rhode Island fishing license or register with a national registry before they can cast their lines in saltwater this year.

The registration and licensure are part of a program to get more information on ocean wildlife in the state, says Bob Ballou of the Division of Fish and Wildlife for the Department of Environmental Management.

That's the inspiration behind "Audio Winds," an installation by audio artist Marc Levitt now at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. Audio Winds presents a rich collage of sounds that might have been heard in one particular place over the course of several centuries.
