AAA predicts major jump in Fourth of July travelers

Providence, R.I. – AAA is predicting a more than 19 percent increase in the number of New Englanders traveling this holiday weekend when compared to the same time last year.

Lloyd Albert, of AAA of Southern New England, says 1.7 million New Englanders are heading away from home for the Fourth of July, outpacing national estimates.

America's Cup trophy comes to Newport, officials hope the race follows

Providence, R.I. – The winners of the 33rd America's Cup race toured Newport on Thursday, as state officials campaign for the return of the yachting competition to Rhode Island waters. The famed trophy was also on display in the city.

State officials believe the return of the America's Cup would boost revenue and tourism and shine an international media spotlight on Rhode Island. The state hosted the competition for decades until losing the race to Australia in the early 80's.

Lone Republican out of Providence mayoral race

Providence, R.I. – The lone Republican candidate for Providence mayor has pulled out of the race.

Daniel Harrop, a psychiatrist, says he'll instead run for the General Assembly against incumbent Rep. Edith Ajello.

Harrop tells The Providence Journal that voters in Providence have a wide range of choices for mayor, and that he'll be helping the Republican Party by running for the General Assembly.

Cranston sends incorrect car tax bills

Cranston, R.I. – People who live in Cranston and own cars built between 1986 and 1992 received car tax bills in error that will soon be replaced.

The city says the depreciation values were incorrectly reflected so the bills were higher than they should have been. New bills will be issued in the next two weeks, along with a new payment date.

Cars built before 1986 and after 1993 received correct excise tax bills that should be paid accordingly.

National Grid and Block Island wind farm sign new contract

Providence, R.I. – Governor Don Carcieri says National Grid has signed a new 20-year agreement to buy electricity generated by Deepwater Wind's wind farm off of Block Island.

The agreement caps the price of electricity from Deepwater's Block Island wind farm at 24 cents per kilowatt-hour in its first year of operation.

Once the agreement is submitted, the state public utilities commission will have 45 days to make a decision on it.

Newport welcomes America's Cup trophy

Newport. R.I. – The America's Cup trophy is on display in Newport, as the city competes to host the next edition of the international sailing competition.

State and federal officials on Thursday made an aggressive sales pitch, declaring Newport the country's sailing capital and saying that the race could reinvigorate the state's economy.
