In Westerly, the Zoning Board is holding a special meeting this evening about a controversial quarry. The board is hearing an appeal about an expansion at the quarry.

The Department of Environmental management has reached a settlement in a case over pollution at the Davis Liquid Waste Superfund Site in Smithfield. The settlement was a long time coming, and the clean-up will take even longer.

A Superior Court Judge is expected rule on a lawsuit that could temporarily shut down a quarry in Westerly. Residents are complaining that Copar Quarry is a threat to their health. Copar disagrees.

The state has a long standing ban on incinerating trash. However a new bill introduced in the senate could allow the Central Landfill to look at incinerating some of the state’s trash.

A bill introduced in the state Senate allows the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation to once again use recycled glass as part of its daily cover material atop the landfill. The original amendment banned construction and demolition materials, including glass, for use as daily cover material at the landfill.

Providence launched a smartphone app to track the rides of cyclists earlier this year.  After a couple hiccups, the app is now helping city planners create a bicycle master plan for the city.

In less than 20 years, a quarter of the state’s population will be older than 60. Rhode Island Public Radio is looking at this growing demographic in a series we call “The Silver Boom: Aging in Rhode Island.”

Since last summer, all the glass you put into your recycling bin has been dumped into the landfill with the rest of the garbage. It was due to legislation passed in the General Assembly last session. But after about eight months of work, and more than 13,000 tons of glass thrown away, the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation--the company that runs the state landfill-- may have finally found a home for recyclable glass.

The Community College of Rhode Island is upgrading its flagship campus in Warwick. The upgrades are geared to save energy costs.

Shell fishermen are banned from fishing in the Upper Narragansett Bay. The Department of Environmental Management has found high levels of bacteria in the water.

DEM’s Chief of Surface Water Protection, Angelo Liberti, says it’s due to a portion of the Bucklin Point Wastewater Treatment plant in East Providence being taken offline. "And with the last rain event, they had some trouble balancing their treatment flow through their system which resulted in the release of partially treated wastewater.”
