Ian Donnis has been the political reporter for Rhode Island Public Radio since 2009. The Washington Post has named him as one of Rhode Island’s best political reporters. In addition to other tasks, Ian tweets frequently at @IanDon, hosts RIPR’s weekly Political Roundtable, and contributes to the station’s On Politics blog. A regular panelist since 2003 on WPRI/WNAC-TV’s Newsmakers, Ian previously worked for the Providence Phoenix, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, and The Associated Press. His reporting has been recognized by the Associated Press, the New England Press Association, the Rhode Island Press Association, and Rhode Island for Community & Justice.

Read the pension settlement letters between Lincoln Chafee and Gina Raimondo

Governor Lincoln Chafee used a November 13 letter to state Treasurer Gina Raimondo to broach the possibility of seeking a settlement to the pension lawsuit.

The ensuing correspondence offers some insight into the two officials’ viewpoints and their personal styles. 

In a letter on his official stationery, Chafee crossed out “Treasurer Raimondo” salutation, replacing it with a handwritten “[Dear] Gina”:

Chafee says seeking a pension settlement is in taxpayers’ interest

Governor Lincoln Chafee says the uncertainty and cost of litigating a union challenge to last year’s landmark pension overhaul justify efforts to seek a settlement.

In a telephone interview from Washington, DC, where he’s attending a National Governors Association meeting, Chafee dismissed concerns that a settlement would dilute the pension overhaul to such an extent that it would hurt Rhode Island’s fiscal condition.

Solomon’s war chest towers over council colleagues ahead of big Monday fundraiser

As he prepares for a possible mayoral run in 2014, Providence City Council President Michael Solomon has a big fundraising edge over his 14 council colleagues.

Solomon’s war chest was reported at almost $114,000 in a third quarter filing with the state Board of Elections — up from $84,923 at the end of Q1.

Most RI Powerball winners got $4 each — was it worth it?

Almost 48,000 winning Powerball tickets were sold in Rhode Island, although most were for the princely prize of $4, according to the state Lottery. Take away the $2 per-ticket cost, and the net gain for the vast bulk of winners was $2.

That’s a far cry from $587.5 million jackpot that sparked fevered dreams across the land of striking it rich. (Two winning jackpot tickets were sold, one each in Arizona and Missouri.)

It’s on! Statehouse tree lighting announced with less than 30 minutes’ notice

The governor’s office sent out the following advisory at about 11:32 am today:

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee will host the 2012 State House tree lighting today, November 29, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. in the State House rotunda. The student orchestra from Cranston’s Park View Middle School will be performing holiday songs in the Bell Area of the rotunda beginning at noon.

According to the governor’s schedule, Chafee’s due for a ribbon-cutting for JetBlue at T.F. Green Airport at 1:25 pm.

The House of Representatives, for example, has its own Pinterest page – highlighted by a picture of Representative Joseph McNamara standing in front of an Irish and Italian flag.
