A large group of Brown University students and faculty rallied Thursday to show their solidarity with college students in Missouri. Students at the University of Missouri forced the resignation this week of the university president, amid allegations that a ignored racially charged atmosphere on campus.
At Brown University, students stepped forward to express their opinions on race, including Brown senior Justice Gaines.
“I’m tired, because a black student can go on a hunger strike, but it’s not until the black football players stop entertaining the white folks that the president resigns,” said Gaines.
Similar protests took place at college campuses across the country. Students at Providence College planned a rally of their own Thursday, organized by the school’s chapter of the NAACP. Providence College has dealt with its own racial tensions. Students and faculty of color have alleged racial profiling on campus in the past.
The University of Missouri’s has since appointed a recently retired black senior administrator to be the university system’s interim president.
