The House Finance Committee is set to hear testimony on Governor Gina Raimondo’s free college tuition plan Wednesday.

Raimondo has proposed giving Rhode Islanders two years of free tuition at CCRI, Rhode Island College, and URI.

The governor says her plan will help more people to get jobs.

But House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello has reacted coolly to the college tuition proposal. He suggests the initial $10 million cost could be better used on improving k to 12 education.

The Finance Committee will take testimony on the tuition plan as part of its review of the proposed budget for the fiscal year starting July 1.
