AAA anticipates millions of drivers on the road this Memorial Weekend, and rising gas prices are not expected to deter travelers.

AAA Northeast said gas prices are about 66 cents higher than they were this time last year. However, despite the rise in gas prices, their survey predicts 5 percent more people will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend. That translates to almost 2 million New England residents.

Diana Imondi, AAA Manager of Traffic Safety, credits this to a stronger economy. “I mean the economy is obviously looking pretty good. We also, in previous research a couple months ago, looking at travel trends, families just wanting to take their vacation time, spend more time together,” she said.

Imondi said roughly 90 percent of holiday travelers will be driving. She expects traffic congestion will be at its worst Thursday and Friday afternoon during your commute home.

Also, Imondi said one of the top New England travel destinations this weekend is Boston.
