According to a report by the Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance, a nonprofit defense industry trade group, Rhode Island’s defense industry generated close to $147 million in tax revenue in 2016.
The report tallied an estimated 30,000 defense jobs in the Ocean State for the same year, a 12 percent increase since 2012.
Salaries, another bright spot for the industry, were above average. The SENEDIA report found on average, private defense employees earn 59 percent more than non-farm industry workers, at roughly $70,200 per year. Department of Defense employees make an average of $91,700, according to the report.
In 2016, private and government defense jobs were found to have brought in a total of $2 billion in household income.
