An unidentified 17-year-old male has been arrested in connection with a shooting at the Providence Place Mall Monday afternoon.
According to police, at around 4:40 p.m. a fight broke out inside the mall. The altercation eventually moved to the parking garage where at least one gunshot was fired, injuring an unidentified 19-year-old male. Dozens of mall staff and shoppers were evacuated following the shooting.
Customers walked out of the mall calmly at about 5 p.m., after security personnel and police informed them the facility would be closing. Police officers, who could be seen near escalators and mall exits, declined to tell shoppers the specific reason for the closure, saying only that a dangerous and violent incident had occurred.
Police later said the shooting happened in the second level of the parking garage, outside of Nordstrom’s department store.
The suspect was found, with the help of surveillance footage, at a Pawtucket home several hours after the shooting.
Police have not recovered a weapon and said more arrests are possible in what they characterized as an “active, ongoing investigation.”
