Trump Nominates RI Psychiatrist To Help Lead Agency She Criticized

Apr 25, 2017

Rhode Island’s chief medical officer in the behavioral health department, Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, has been nominated by President Donald Trump for a position in the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

McCance-Katz worked in that department before - from 2013 to 2015 - as the first chief medical officer in the mental health division. A year after she finished that job she authored an essay accusing the department of being hostile to the use of psychiatric medication as treatment for the seriously ill.

The nomination would bring McCance-Katz back to HHS as assistant secretary for mental health and substance abuse.
