Politico reports today that the National Republican Congressional Committee is supporting a new attack effort in support of Brendan Doherty’s campaign against David Cicilline:

Campaign watchers have long anticipated a spot criticizing Congressman David Cicilline’s 2010 evaluation of Providence’s supposedly “excellent” fiscal condition. Republican challenger Brendan Doherty has now launched such a commercial, entitled “Cover Up.”

Via news release, the Doherty campaign says:

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the battle for women voters has emerged as a central theme in the intensifying First Congressional District race between Republican Brendan Doherty and David Cicilline.

Doherty today changed his tactics, adopting a tougher tone in accusing Cicilline of being hypocritical by questioning Doherty’s commitment to protecting women.

Republican congressional candidate Brendan Doherty had a strong fundraising quarter, raising about $308,000 in Q3, according to an estimate provided by campaign manager Ian Prior. The estimate for Doherty’s cash on hand is $506,000.

Numbers for Q3 weren’t avaiable yet from Democrat David Cicilline’s campaign. Cicilline pulled in more than $300,000 in Q2.

Providence lawyer David Vogel, the independent candidate in the First Congressional District, has mostly gained attention for attracting 8 percent of the vote in a recent Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee poll.
