The First Unitarian Church of Providence is publicly launching a sanctuary for individuals or families facing deportation, the church announced today.
The Benevolent Street congregation will hold a public blessing of the shelter at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 7th. The statement said that, “members of First Unitarian Church of Providence feels that this is their moral imperative to put faith in action.”
The shelter is the result of two years of planning and renovations, said church spokeswoman Mary K. Talbot.
Established in 1720, the congregation serves more than 600 children, youth and adults from Rhode Island Massachusetts and Connecticut.
